What RuPaul REINFORCES About Building a Global luxury Brand

Now, traditionalists might look at RuPaul and argue he doesn't fit the classic definition of a 'luxury brand.'

I don't care about traditional definitions.

To me, real luxury isn't a price tag or a French heritage house, it is being utterly irreplaceable.

It is taking what makes you radically different and polishing it until no one on earth can replicate what you do. By that standard, RuPaul is one of the greatest luxury brands of our era.

Standing in the crowd at Brighton Pride, watching RuPaul sashay onto the stage, was iconic. OF COURSE. But the brand strategist in me couldn’t switch off (Even if I was 3 beers & 6 Spicy Margs deep).

I kept thinking of what I teach my creative students. Allow me to explain.

Long before I was running HYB Luxury Marketing, back when I was at university, RuPaul’s Drag Race was a constant on our TV screen. My best friend Chris and I would watch and debrief.

To most people, it was just brilliant entertainment, but RuPaul didn't just build a show; he built a world that people wanted to be a part of.

So in Brighton looking at him up there, shining, effortless. I mean truly effortless; it said it was his DJ set but he literally just turned up in a white suit, played the tunes he loved, danced on stage, and we all went crazzzzyyyy. But he can get away with it, because it’s RuPaul and no matter what he does he has built a personal brand so strong, that he could do anything and we would all still love him.

He perfectly embodies the exact philosophy I preach to creative professionals every single day: real luxury and commanding top money isn’t even about money or superficial polish.

Real luxury is the courage to be bold, be different and to run with whatever crazy ideas you have and polish them to within an inch of their life so that eventually one day, you are the best. You are in demand. And YOU too can command top money.

Yet, so many business owners completely miss this.

The Luxury Costume: Why Copying the End Game Is Killing Your Brand

When I coach wedding professionals, I see the same mistake consistently.

People treat luxury like a costume you put on. They speak softly, have a neutral palette, smooth down their edges, and strip away their opinions until they are entirely unrecognisable. They are boring, bland and they blend in.

Then they sit back and wonder why their β€˜luxury brand’ they spent thousands on isn't attracting high-paying, dream clients.

Luxury is not shallow, and it is not just an aesthetic. True luxury has an opinion. A worldview. A reason for existing beyond simply making "pretty things for people."

The fundamental issue is that people look at the icons at the top of their industry and try to copy their current state. They see the confidence and subtle marketing, and they try to replicate it. But that is completely backward. You are trying to copy their end game while ignoring the roots that got them there.

It’s like trying to build a house starting with the roof. It doesn't work.

Look at fashion’s greatest legends:

  • Alexander McQueen didn't build an empire by copying other polite designers; he built it because he rejected mainstream definitions of prettiness, choosing instead to find inspiration in the dark, raw, and grotesque aspects of life.

  • Coco Chanel disrupted women's fashion by stripping away corsets and championing functional liberation.

  • Vivienne Westwood brought punk rebellion and unapologetic political stances to high fashion.

Do you think at the time if they were too scared to voice these opinions because they were scared of not fitting in they would have built what they did? NO, of course not.

None of them became 'luxury' because they played safe. They became luxury because they had a point of view, a story that cut through the noise, and a refusal to apologise for their existence.

Luxury relies on identity, not imitation.

What RuPaul Taught Me About Trust, Manifestation, and the Universal Compass

What RuPaul is today is pure, high-octane classic glamour, ultra-tailored Zaldy gowns, pristine symmetrical silhouettes, and flawless luxury polish designed to embody the ultimate "Supermodel of the World." He has even expanded his world into luxury home decor, releasing vibrant, maximalist, House of Hackney-style wallpaper and textiles. He turned his personal aesthetic into a lifestyle empire because his identity is that strong.

But he didn't start there. Very far from it.

Back in the 1980s, coming up through the gritty underground punk and drag scenes of Atlanta and New York, RuPaul was far from what anyone would call "luxury". He was performing in cheap, matted wigs, wearing DIY outfits, doing low-budget public-access TV, and interviewing street characters on camera.

It was raw, unrefined, counter-culture, and completely unpolished.

Had he tried to jump straight to pristine, safe luxury back then, he would have been laughed out of the room. Instead, he owned his raw, unique voice, stayed true to his internal compass, and polished that difference over decades until the world caught up to him.

He went radically against the tide.

RuPaul often speaks about his views on the universe, alignment, and manifestation. To me, manifestation in business isn't some mystical shortcut; it’s the ultimate act of self-trust.

It’s having the conviction to back your internal compass over market trends and outside noise.

When you align your business with your intrinsic truth, you project an undeniable frequency. High-net-worth clients don't just buy a service; they buy into the absolute conviction of the person delivering it.

Top Brands Are Diamonds, Not Clones

There isn't room at the top for everyone to look and sound the same.

The people at the very peak of their industries aren't replicas of one another, they are diamonds.

  • They are sharp: They have defined edges, strong values, and clear boundaries.

  • They are polished: They have spent years honing their craft to become the undisputed best at what they do.

  • They are unique: Every single one reflects light differently.

RuPaul is luxury, but not because he’s rich. He is luxury because he took his unique story, his specific values, and his distinct perspective, and he polished that difference until he became the best in the world at what HE does. And now he is THE QUEEN OF DRAG.

When you try to blend in with your competitors, you commoditise yourself. And when you become a commodity, clients shop on price. But when you own your distinct identity, price ceases to be the primary metric.

Are You Doing Any of These Things That Dull Your Shine?

Be honest with yourself for a moment. Are you stuck in any of these self-sabotaging loops?

  • The Doom Scroll: Constantly scrolling through social media, hoping that just one post in the hundreds you’ve viewed in the last hour will give you that spark of inspiration you’re desperately looking for... but it never does.

  • The AI Spiral: Spending hours having conversations with AI, only to end up feeling more confused and getting nowhere, because the more you talk, the more it clouds your mind until you feel like you’ve completely lost your own ability to think.

  • Trend Paralysis: Getting so caught up in Instagram trends, algorithms, and growth hacks that you feel stripped of the ability to think independently. You dread posting on social media because you feel like you have absolutely no idea what to say.

  • Instant Self-Censorship: A brilliant spark or original idea comes to you, and immediately your conscious mind shuts it down as "silly," "not luxury," or "too different."

  • Conformity Fatigue: You hate social media because you feel forced to conform to a formula that isn't even yours.

Newsflash: This Is Why Your Brand Is Losing Its Magnetic Edge

All of these behaviours are warning signs that you are actively ignoring your intuition.

You are suppressing the very thing that makes you special.

And the more you stamp down your unique voice to fit into a safe, muted box, the flatter and less attractive your brand becomes.

How can you possibly shine when you are too busy looking at everyone else?

What you need right now isn't another brand design refresh, another trend, or another hour spent polling AI for answers. You need a detox.

Step away from the screen. Meditate. Let the digital noise quiet down so your mind can clear. You have to create enough space for your inner voice to get louder, so you can finally hear what it’s been trying to tell you all along.

The Path Forward: Stop Blending In, Start Owning Your Voice

Nobody starts as a luxury brand. They start by owning their voice and standing firm in what they believe.

If you want to build a brand that commands true authority and attracts top-tier clients, you have to stop looking sideways at what everyone else is doing.

  1. Find your sharp edges. What do you believe that your competitors are too scared to say? Stop smoothing over the parts of your perspective that make you distinct.

  2. Stop catering to everyone. Safe messaging attracts lukewarm clients. Depth and conviction attract people who are ready to invest in you.

  3. Polish your difference. Focus on becoming undeniably exceptional at what you do, backed by a narrative that only you can own.

Strip away the generic luxury costume. Back your internal voice, give your brand real depth, and let it have something people can get their teeth into that feels TRULY different.
